Built on the Original Method

Classical Pilates as Joseph Pilates intended it. Precise, rigorous, and deeply effective. Taught in a studio where you are known by name.

A Studio Born from Conviction

Sarah Ellison danced professionally for twelve years. When a hip injury ended that chapter, she found herself in a clinical Pilates session, working on a Gratz reformer with an instructor who had trained under Romana Kryzanowska. That first session changed everything.

She spent the next four years training comprehensively in the classical method, completing over 600 hours of apprenticeship under Sari Mejia Santo, herself a direct student of Romana. Sarah learned not just the exercises, but the logic behind the order, the reason for every spring setting, and the art of reading a body and knowing exactly what it needs.

Core Balance Pilates opened in 2018 in a small space in Capitol Hill with three reformers, a mat room, and a simple idea: classical Pilates, taught seriously, in classes small enough to actually teach. No mirrors. No music. No distractions from the work.

Seven years later, the studio has expanded to its current home in the Highlands neighborhood. The reformers are still Gratz. The class sizes are still capped at six. The work is still classical.

Sarah Ellison, CPT

Studio Founder — PMA Certified Pilates Teacher

Sarah's approach to teaching is shaped equally by her background as a dancer and by the rigor of her classical training. She believes the body responds to precision and that most people are stronger than they think, provided they are shown how to access that strength correctly.

She studied under Sari Mejia Santo, one of a small number of instructors trained directly by Romana Kryzanowska, which places Sarah's lineage two generations from Joseph Pilates himself. That lineage matters. Classical training is not just a style preference; it is a complete system with an internal logic that contemporary hybrid methods often dilute.

Sarah holds additional certifications in prenatal and postnatal Pilates and has worked extensively with clients recovering from spinal surgery, hip and knee replacement, and stress fractures. She teaches every class herself and takes on a limited number of private clients each month.

Studio Philosophy

Three principles guide everything at Core Balance. Not marketing language. Actual decisions we make every day about how to run this studio.

Small Class Sizes

We cap reformer classes at six students. Not because we have to, because it is the only number that lets us actually teach. In a class of six, your instructor can see your foot position, notice a compensating hip, and correct a head placement. In a class of twenty, they cannot. We will never trade quality for revenue by filling the room.

Classical Method

We teach the original Pilates repertoire in the original order with the original apparatus. Contemporary "Pilates-inspired" classes often remove the most challenging and most rewarding elements. We do not simplify the work. We teach you how to do it correctly, starting from where you are and building methodically.

Personalized Attention

Every student who comes through the door has a different body, different history, and different goal. Our job is to see those differences and respond to them, not to deliver a scripted class at the room and hope it fits. This is why we recommend private sessions for new students and why we check in individually during every group class.

A Studio Designed for the Work

We moved into our current Highlands location in 2021. The space was built from the ground up with classical Pilates in mind: high ceilings, natural light from the north, and a floor plan sized to what the work actually requires rather than what generates the most monthly memberships.

Gratz Apparatus

Six Gratz reformers, two trapeze tables, a full Wunda chair, two ladder barrels, and two spine correctors. Gratz has manufactured Pilates apparatus to the original Pilates specifications since the 1960s. The quality of the springs and the precision of the construction matters for the work.

Light-Filled Mat Room

A dedicated mat studio with Pilates-specific mats, wood floors, and a full-length mirror used selectively when it aids learning. The mat room hosts our mat classes and is available for private mat sessions.

Clean & Quiet

We clean equipment between every use. There is no music during class. We believe distraction is the enemy of body awareness, and body awareness is the whole point of Pilates.

Private Changing Rooms

Two private changing rooms, lockers, and a simple refreshment area with filtered water. Nothing luxurious; everything you actually need.
