Directions to Harbor Point

By Water

Harbor Point is located on the western bank of the Ashley River, approximately 2.2 nautical miles south of the Ashley River Bridge.

  1. Enter the Ashley River from Charleston Harbor on a heading of 195 degrees from the Highway 17 Bridge.
  2. Follow the main channel south. Harbor Point is on your starboard side, marked by a green buoy at the entrance channel.
  3. The entrance channel bearing is 285 degrees true, marked with red-right-returning daymarks. Depth is 8 feet at mean low water through the channel.
  4. Hail us on VHF Channel 16 as you approach and we'll switch to Channel 68 for slip assignment.
  5. Fuel dock is immediately to port upon entering the basin. Transient dock is to starboard. Office is the building with the blue roof.

Approach waypoint: 32°43.8N / 079°58.2W. Shoal water exists east of the marked channel. Do not cut inside the daymarks.

By Road

Harbor Point Marina is located south of downtown Charleston on the Ashley River waterfront. The address is on Harbor Point Road off Folly Road.

  1. From downtown Charleston, take Folly Road (SC-171 South) from the James Island Connector.
  2. Drive south on Folly Road for approximately 4 miles past the strip mall area.
  3. Turn right onto Harbor Point Road at the brown marina sign. The turn is just past the Lowcountry Fire Station.
  4. Follow Harbor Point Road 0.6 miles to the end. The gate and parking area will be on your left.
  5. Boat ramp parking is straight ahead. Office and ship's store are in the building with the nautical flags.

Trailer rigs: use the right lane at the entrance gate. Pull-through spaces are available for vehicles with trailers longer than 25 feet.

Harbor Approach Notes

Tides: Charleston Harbor experiences 5.5 to 6.5 foot tidal ranges. Plan your approach and departure with tides in mind, especially if your vessel draws more than 4 feet. Tide tables are posted at the fuel dock and available from the office.

Bridge Clearance: The Ashley River Bridge (Highway 17) has a 40-foot fixed vertical clearance. Sailboats with taller rigs should note that the James Island Connector bridge provides no access south. All vessels with masts over 40 feet must plan accordingly.

Traffic: The Ashley River channel carries significant commercial and recreational traffic on weekends. Keep a sharp watch for personal watercraft and kayakers in the 5-mph no-wake zones near the marina entrance.

Speed Limit: The entire marina basin is a no-wake zone. SC law requires minimum wake speed from the marked entrance buoy to all docks. Violations are reported to DNR enforcement and may result in loss of marina privileges.

Common Questions

Answers to the things most people ask before they call.

Do you have transient slips and how far in advance should I reserve?
Yes, we maintain approximately 20 slips for transient boaters. During the peak season (Memorial Day through Labor Day), we recommend calling at least 48 to 72 hours ahead. Off-season, you can usually call the same day. We don't take reservations through email for transient slips — call (843) 555-0172 or hail us on VHF 16. Maximum transient stay is 14 consecutive nights.
Is there a pump-out station? Is it self-serve or attended?
Every slip at Harbor Point has an individual pump-out connection at the dock box. Seasonal slipholders get pump-out once per week included; annual leaseholders get twice per week included. Additional pump-outs are $15 each. The fuel dock also has a free-standing pump-out station available to transient vessels and day visitors for $20 per use. Attendants handle pump-out during staffed hours; a self-service station is available at the fuel dock 24 hours.
What security measures does the marina have?
The marina operates with keypad-access gates at all dock entry points. Annual and seasonal slipholders receive a key fob that logs entry and exit. The property has continuous video monitoring at all dock areas, the parking lot, and the service yard. We have a live security patrol from 10pm to 6am during boating season. All guests and service workers sign in at the office. If you observe anything suspicious, contact us directly or call 911.
Do you allow liveaboards?
We have a limited liveaboard program for annual leaseholders only. Currently, we have a waitlist for liveaboard designation. Liveaboards must comply with SC DHEC regulations regarding holding tanks and must have all USCG-required safety equipment aboard. An annual inspection is required. Liveaboard slips carry a $150/month supplement on the annual lease rate. If you're interested in liveaboard status, mention it when you submit a slip inquiry and we'll put you on the notification list.
What's included in the winter storage rate?
Winter storage (November through March, or until splash) runs $38 per foot for blocked and covered storage in the yard, or $28 per foot for uncovered blocking. Price includes haul-out, blocking, and re-launch in spring. Jack stands are included. Shore power for battery tenders is available for $40/month. We recommend our winterization package (starting at $285 for single outboards) to protect your engine and systems during storage. Boats stored with us get priority scheduling for spring commissioning.
Can I do my own boat work in my slip or the yard?
Slipholders may perform their own routine maintenance (oil changes, detailing, light mechanical work) in their slips. Work that generates significant mess, noise, or chemical runoff must be done in the designated service area. All bottom paint work must be done in the paint yard with proper containment — this is a regulatory requirement, not a preference. Engines cannot be run at full throttle in the slips. If you want to use the yard for a larger DIY project, talk to us — we can usually arrange access for a small daily fee.
Do you accept credit cards? What are the payment terms for slips?
We accept Visa, MasterCard, and American Express for all fuel, store, and service transactions. For slip rentals, we accept check, ACH bank transfer, or card (with a 3% processing fee for card payments). Seasonal slips require a deposit of one month's equivalent at signing, with the balance due April 1st. Annual leases are billed quarterly. Payment plans are available — ask Claire about what works for your situation.
