What People Ask Before Getting Started

What does "fiduciary" actually mean?
A fiduciary is legally required to act in your best interest at all times. This is a higher standard than the "suitability" standard that many broker-dealers operate under, which only requires that a recommendation be "suitable" — not necessarily optimal. As an RIA, we are bound to the fiduciary standard every time we give advice.
How are you paid? Are there hidden fees?
We are a fee-only firm. Our only revenue comes from fees paid directly by our clients — either as a percentage of assets under management (0.75–1.25% annually) or as flat planning fees. We receive no commissions, no referral payments, and no compensation from any product provider. All fees are disclosed in writing before you engage us. Our ADV Part 2 contains the complete fee schedule.
Do you have a minimum asset requirement?
Our standard minimum is $500,000 in investable assets. This allows us to do comprehensive planning that meaningfully impacts your financial outcomes. We occasionally make exceptions for clients who are on a strong savings trajectory and expect to reach that threshold within a few years. We're happy to have an initial conversation regardless.
What happens in the first meeting?
The first meeting is 60 minutes and is entirely about you. We'll ask about your current situation, your goals, your concerns, and what's worked or hasn't worked in your financial life so far. We won't pitch products or push you to make any decisions. At the end, we'll give you an honest sense of whether we think we can help and what working together would look like. There's no pressure and no obligation.
Do you manage investments directly, or use outside managers?
We manage investments directly for our clients. Accounts are held in custody at Charles Schwab or Fidelity Investments — large, reputable custodians where you retain direct ownership of all assets. We have trading authority on your accounts but can never move money to ourselves. You receive statements directly from the custodian independent of anything we send.
What's your investment philosophy?
We follow an evidence-based, passive-leaning investment approach. The academic evidence strongly supports diversified, low-cost portfolios over active stock-picking or market timing. We use index funds and ETFs as core holdings and tilt portfolios based on factors supported by decades of research. We do not chase performance, trade frequently, or speculate. Our goal is a portfolio you can hold through market cycles without making costly emotional decisions.
