How a love of storytelling and a healthy obsession with puzzles became Seattle's most talked-about escape experience.
How We Started
The Enigma Room started in 2019 with two friends, a rented warehouse in SoDo, and a shared conviction that escape rooms didn't have to be generic. Founders Dana Keller and Roshan Mehta had spent three years playing every escape room in the Pacific Northwest, keeping a running log of what worked, what didn't, and what they would have done differently.
The answer they kept coming back to: story. Most escape rooms treated narrative as decoration. They wanted rooms where the story was the puzzle, where you had to understand what happened in order to figure out what to do next.
The Alchemist's Lab opened in February 2020 with a single room and 18 available time slots per week. Within three months, those slots were selling out. The Heist followed that fall. Today, The Enigma Room has four original rooms, a full team of Game Masters, and a waitlist most weekends.
What Sets Us Apart
We've played hundreds of escape rooms so you don't have to settle for a mediocre one.
Every puzzle in every room was designed from scratch by our team. We don't use off-the-shelf lock sets or generic puzzle templates. If it's in our room, we built it.
The narrative isn't set dressing. You'll need to understand the story to solve the puzzles. Every clue, every object, every detail is part of a coherent world with real logic.
We partner with local set designers, prop builders, and lighting specialists. Our rooms are built to theatrical standards, not converted conference rooms with padlocks zip-tied to things.
Our GMs are trained in the story of every room. They watch your session and deliver hints that keep you in the world, not hints that break the immersion with a clipboard announcement.
We rate our rooms honestly. The Heist is genuinely approachable. Pharaoh's Tomb is genuinely hard. We test every room with fresh playtesters before it opens and tune based on real completion data.
The Enigma Room is not a franchise. It's not venture-backed. Dana and Roshan still work the building and still design every new room themselves. That's not changing.
The People Behind the Curtain
Every session is guided by one of our trained GMs. They know the rooms inside and out, and they're rooting for you.
Co-Founder & Head of Room Design
Dana built the logic systems inside every Enigma Room puzzle. A former escape-room addict and narrative game designer, she's the one who figures out how the story and the puzzles lock together. She's completed over 200 escape rooms across eight countries and takes notes on all of them.
Co-Founder & Head of Experience
Roshan came from theater and live events before pivoting to escape rooms. He built our GM training program, designed the physical flow of each room, and is obsessed with the ten seconds after you walk in. "If we haven't transported you in the first minute, we failed," he says. He means it.
Lead Game Master
Mira has run over 600 sessions since joining in 2021. Players request her by name. She has a gift for delivering hints that feel like they came from the story world and not from a screen in the back office. She's also the reigning champion of the internal "escape the GM room" challenge they run for fun.
The Space
We built this place to feel like arriving somewhere. Not just a hallway with numbered doors.
Our gathering space features atmospheric lighting, a seating area for early arrivals, and a brief timeline of the Enigma Room's history. It's the decompression zone before and after your adventure.
Every room is completely private. No strangers added to your group. No shared sessions. The room is yours and yours only for the full 60 minutes, plus a 15-minute pre-game briefing window.
Groups who escape get their photo on the Victory Wall in the lobby. (Groups who don't escape get a different, slightly more sympathetic photo area.) Both are worth looking at on the way out.
Accessibility
We designed our rooms so that the puzzles don't require physical feats to solve. The challenge is in the thinking, not the doing. Most of our rooms are accessible to players with mobility limitations. Contact us ahead of your visit and we'll walk through specifics.
Safety
Every room has a clearly marked emergency exit that can be used at any time, no questions asked. The doors are not locked in any way that prevents you from leaving. This is a puzzle game, not a real imprisonment scenario.
Your Game Master watches your session live and can pause or stop the game at any moment. We do pre-session health and safety briefings for every group, and all staff are trained in first aid.
